Special interest in Chediak Higashi syndrome and chronic granulomatous disease. Also head of the Clinical Immunology Laboratory, providing a full diagnostic and monitoring service for these patients.

Clinical commitments include periods of attending service and bone marrow transplant clinics, and this links into clinical research interests looking at how the immune system recovers following transplantation, and complications such as graft versus host disease.

Clinical interests are the diagnosis and treatment of patients with primary immunodeficiency. Specialist interest in the Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome (WAS), disorders of innate immunity, and Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome. Also conducting trials of somatic gene therapy for various forms of PID including SCID-X1, CGD, ADA-SCID, and WAS.

Penny’s research interests include the psychological impact of immunodeficiencies on children and families. She has carried out research on the long term outcome for children with severe congenital immunodeficiencies treated by HSCT and on quality of life of children affected by an immunodeficiency.

I have an interest in defects of innate immunity, particularly undefined neutrophil disorders. In conjunction with clinical and laboratory colleagues, I am working to develop and expand the range of neutrophil function tests available for patients with suspected neutrophil defects.
